The workflow requires a password when the PDF requires one; it is not a password-cracking service.
Unlock PDF Online
Create an unencrypted copy of a PDF you are authorized to open. Enter the document password when required; SonoFiles renders the readable pages locally and rebuilds them into a new PDF without the source password protection.

Your result is ready
Readable pages are rendered and written into a fresh PDF without the source encryption wrapper.
The page states that interactivity and text layers are lost instead of implying lossless decryption.
The password and selected PDF stay in the browser conversion workflow.
Unlocking a PDF Should Not Mean Guessing Someone Else’s Password
This tool is for a simple, legitimate case: you have a PDF you are allowed to use, you can open it with the correct password, and you need a new copy that does not prompt for that password. SonoFiles does not attempt dictionary attacks, brute force, exploit weak encryption or bypass access you do not possess. If you do not know the required open password, this workflow stops.
How the Browser Creates the Unlocked Copy
Rather than trying to modify the encrypted PDF internals in place, the browser opens the document with the password, renders each page and writes those visible pages into a fresh PDF. The new PDF therefore does not carry the source document’s password encryption. This rebuild is intentionally conservative because it avoids pretending that every PDF permission/encryption combination can be edited losslessly by the lightweight libraries used on the site.
The Important Trade-Off: The New PDF Is Rasterized
Each page becomes an image inside the new document. That means the visible page can be preserved reasonably well, but the original searchable text layer, hyperlinks, form fields, comments, annotations, attachments, bookmarks and metadata are not retained as active PDF objects. If you need a fully interactive unlocked copy, use software with native PDF decryption support and verify that your licence or document policy permits the change.
Open Passwords and PDF Permissions Are Different Concepts
Some PDFs require a password just to open the document. Others open normally but contain permission flags intended to restrict editing, copying or printing. Implementations and viewer behaviour vary. SonoFiles’ unlock workflow is designed around documents that the browser can legitimately render. It does not claim to override legal rights, digital-rights-management systems or organisational access controls. The fact that a file can technically be rendered does not create permission to redistribute it.
When an Unlocked Visual Copy Is Useful
- Removing a password prompt from your own archived statements after moving them into an encrypted storage system.
- Creating a non-interactive review copy of a document you are permitted to share internally.
- Preparing pages for another visual PDF task where the original encryption prevents browser editing.
- Preserving a readable copy when forms, links and selectable text are not needed.
Quality Settings and File Size
Higher rendering resolution improves small print and line detail but creates larger page images and uses more browser memory. The Balanced setting is intended for ordinary office pages. Higher detail can help dense forms or fine text, while Smaller PDF can be adequate for screen-only material. No quality setting restores text semantics because the rebuild is visual by design.
Security and Password Handling
The password is used by the PDF reader in the current browser page and is not intentionally sent to a SonoFiles conversion backend. It is not stored in the generated PDF. Clear the workspace or close the page after working with a sensitive document. The downloaded unlocked copy should be protected according to its content because removing a password can make accidental access easier.
Legal and Organisational Permission Still Matters
Password knowledge is not the same as ownership. Employment policies, licences, contracts, copyright and privacy obligations can still restrict what you are allowed to do with a document. Use the tool only for files you own or are authorized to modify. This is particularly important for client records, purchased publications, government documents and workplace material.
Unlock PDF FAQ
Can this recover a forgotten PDF password?
No. It does not crack or guess passwords. You must supply the open password when the document requires one.
Will the unlocked PDF still have selectable text?
No. The current safety-oriented rebuild rasterizes pages, so the result is visual rather than text-semantic.
Why not just remove the encryption flag directly?
Browser PDF libraries vary in encrypted-document support. Rebuilding readable pages gives a predictable local result with explicit trade-offs.
Are links and forms preserved?
No. They are flattened into the visible page image.
Should I keep the original protected PDF?
Yes. Keep the source file until you have verified the unlocked output and decided how the less-protected copy will be stored.
