Redact PDF Online

Mark the exact areas that must not remain in a shared PDF, page by page. The final file is rebuilt from rendered pages after the redaction boxes are applied, so the covered source text is not left underneath as selectable PDF content.

✓True destructive workflow

Covered source content is not merely hidden behind a rectangle in the original PDF structure.

⚙Exact visual placement

Draw boxes directly on the page preview and review each affected page.

🔒Multi-page control

Navigate pages, undo the latest box or clear only the current page.

∞Privacy-oriented output

The final PDF deliberately sacrifices text layers and interactivity to reduce the risk of recoverable covered content.

A Black Rectangle Is Not Automatically a Redaction

One of the most dangerous PDF mistakes is drawing a black shape over confidential text while leaving the original text underneath. A recipient may be able to select, copy, search, remove the annotation or extract the hidden content. SonoFiles avoids calling that “redacted.” The final export renders each page, applies the marked boxes to the pixels, and then creates a new PDF from those pixels. The covered source text is not copied into the new page content underneath the box.

Place Redactions Where the Sensitive Content Actually Is

After loading the PDF, navigate to the relevant page and drag across the exact area. Redactions are saved as proportional coordinates, so the marked region maps to the same relative location when the page is rendered at export quality. You can place several boxes on one page, move to other pages, undo the latest box or clear a page and start again. The process is intentionally visual because redaction is a decision that should be reviewed by a person.

Why the Output Is Rasterized on Purpose

Rasterization removes the original PDF text and drawing objects from the exported page. That makes the redaction behaviour easier to reason about: the new page contains only the rendered visible result after the sensitive region was covered. The cost is significant. Searchable text, links, forms, comments, annotations, vector graphics, bookmarks tied to page internals and metadata from the original are not preserved as active elements. This is a privacy-first trade-off, not a lossless editing claim.

Black Redaction Versus White Redaction

Black boxes make it obvious that information was intentionally withheld, which is common in legal, public-record and disclosure workflows. White fill can visually blend into a plain page and may be useful when you simply need to remove a value before sharing a working copy. Both colours use the same destructive page rebuild. Choosing white does not make a hidden text layer reappear, but it can make the fact of redaction less obvious to the reader, so choose according to the document’s purpose and applicable policy.

What to Redact Beyond the Obvious Name or Number

  • Names, home addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses when they are not needed.
  • Account numbers, card numbers, tax identifiers, national identifiers and customer IDs.
  • Signatures, faces, QR codes or barcodes that reveal protected information.
  • Case references, health information or employment details where disclosure is restricted.
  • Metadata or attachments separately—visual page redaction does not replace a metadata review of the source file.

Leave a Safety Margin Around Characters and Codes

A box that touches only the visible centre of a character can leave an identifying edge, punctuation mark or part of a barcode exposed. Draw slightly beyond the full sensitive item, especially around signatures, account numbers and QR codes. The goal is not decorative precision; it is dependable removal of the information that should not be disclosed.

Verification Is Part of Redaction, Not an Optional Extra

Open the downloaded PDF in a separate viewer. Inspect every page that contains a redaction. Zoom in around the edges to confirm the entire sensitive item is covered. Try text search for a distinctive redacted phrase or number; because the output is rasterized, it should not exist as PDF text. Also inspect nearby non-sensitive content to make sure the box did not remove more than intended. For formal disclosure, have another authorized person review the result where policy requires dual control.

US, UK and European Privacy Workflows

Different jurisdictions and organisations use different rules for disclosure, public records, employment data, financial records and personal information. The tool does not decide what the law requires you to redact. It provides a technical mechanism for removing selected visible regions. GDPR terminology may be relevant in Europe and the UK, while US sector-specific or state rules can apply to other documents. The correct redaction decision comes from the applicable policy, legal basis and purpose of the disclosure.

Scans, Searchable PDFs and Mixed Documents

The destructive rebuild works whether the page started as a scan or a born-digital PDF because the final output is based on rendered pixels. That consistency is useful, but it also means a clean searchable PDF becomes non-searchable after redaction. If you need a searchable redacted file for accessibility or records management, a specialised redaction application that removes content objects while rebuilding a safe text layer may be more appropriate.

Redact PDF FAQ

Can someone copy the original text from under the black box?

In the generated output, the source page is rasterized after the box is applied, so the original underlying PDF text is not copied into the new page.

Does this remove PDF metadata too?

The rebuilt PDF does not intentionally copy the source metadata, but visual redaction is not a substitute for a complete document-disclosure policy. Review filenames and any external information you share alongside the file.

Why did my PDF stop being searchable?

That is an intentional consequence of the destructive rasterized rebuild used to avoid retaining the covered source text underneath.

Can I redact several pages?

Yes. Redaction boxes are stored per page until you export the rebuilt document.

Should I delete the original after redaction?

Not automatically. Keep or dispose of the source according to your records and security policy. The redacted copy serves a different sharing purpose.
