Pick a PDF tool by what needs to change
PDFs can contain text, scans, images, forms, annotations and page-level structure, so different jobs need different operations.
If your problem is file size, use compression rather than rebuilding the document. If pages are in the wrong order, reorder them instead of splitting and merging unless that is genuinely necessary. Use OCR when a scan looks readable but the text cannot be selected. Use page extraction when you need a subset while leaving the source untouched, and use page deletion only when the output should permanently omit those pages.
Visual changes and document changes are not the same
Adding a watermark or page numbers changes what readers see, while flattening can change how annotations or form content are represented. Cropping adjusts the visible page area; it is not a substitute for secure redaction. Likewise, placing a visual signature on a PDF is different from applying a certificate-backed digital signature. Choosing the correct tool matters when a document has legal, financial or compliance significance.
Verify the output before relying on it
Open the finished PDF and check the pages you changed, plus the first and last page. Confirm text readability, page order, orientation, links or forms that matter, and whether sensitive material is actually removed rather than merely covered. Browser-based processing can be convenient and private, but the resulting file still deserves the same review you would give an export from desktop software.
