Your signed PDF is ready

Put your handwritten mark on the page that needs it

Some PDF workflows do not need an online signing service, an invitation email or a certificate. You may simply have a completed form, approval sheet, consent page or acknowledgement that needs your handwritten mark in a specific box. SonoFiles lets you draw that mark, choose the exact PDF page, control its size and position, and export a separate signed copy. The source file is left untouched.

Know what is being added: this tool creates a visual electronic signature on the PDF page. It does not verify who drew it, issue a signing certificate, create a trusted timestamp or turn the document into a certificate-backed digital signature.

A four-step signing workflow

  1. Open the PDF and navigate to the page containing the signature line or box.
  2. Draw your signature with a mouse, trackpad, stylus or finger. Clear and redraw it until the mark looks right.
  3. Click or tap the exact signing area on the PDF preview. Drag the signature to fine-tune its position, and use the blue resize handle or width control to adjust its size.
  4. Select Sign PDF. Open the exported copy and check the page, placement and surrounding text before you share it.

What changes inside the exported PDF?

The signature drawing is embedded as visible page content on the page you selected. SonoFiles does not resize the sheet, rewrite the document text or deliberately flatten unrelated pages. Because the result is a new file, you can compare it with the original before deciding which copy to keep or send.

This distinction matters for multi-page documents. Choosing page 7, for example, adds the mark to page 7 rather than stamping every page. If several pages each require a signature, process and verify the document deliberately rather than assuming one mark satisfies every signature field.

Visual electronic signature and certificate signature are different things

ApproachWhat is attached to the PDFTypical consideration
Visual electronic signatureA visible handwritten mark becomes part of the selected page.Useful when the recipient accepts a visible signature and does not require cryptographic validation.
Certificate-based digital signatureCryptographic signing information tied to a certificate, with validation capabilities depending on the signing system.Needed when a workflow specifically calls for certificate validation, identity assurance, trusted timestamps or another regulated signing method.

The appearance can be similar in a PDF reader, but the evidence behind the two methods is not the same. SonoFiles deliberately describes the output as a visual signature so you can choose the right method for the document instead of being given a stronger security claim than the file actually contains.

A4, US Letter, Legal and mixed-size PDFs

Signature placement is calculated from the dimensions of the actual PDF page, not from a hard-coded paper preset. That lets the same workspace handle A4 documents common across the UK and Europe, US Letter forms, Legal pages and PDFs created at other dimensions. The existing page size is retained.

A single PDF can also contain pages with different dimensions or orientations. Always position the signature while viewing the page that will receive it; a percentage that looks correct on a portrait A4 page may represent a different physical location on a landscape or unusually sized page.

Place the signature without covering names, dates or clauses

The preview is the primary placement control: click or tap where the signature belongs, then drag the visible signature overlay until it aligns with the intended line or box. The horizontal and vertical percentage fields update from that placement and remain available for precise adjustments. Signature width is proportional to the page, so the confirmed position scales with the actual PDF page rather than with your monitor size.

For a narrow signature box, reduce the width before moving the mark into place. Leave enough space around printed names, dates, witness fields and nearby clauses. After export, inspect the result at normal zoom because a placement that seems comfortable in a scaled-down preview can be tighter on the actual page.

Your document stays in the browser during this signing operation

The selected PDF is read and modified in browser memory. It does not need to be uploaded to a SonoFiles conversion server for the signature to be placed. Supporting PDF code can load as normal website assets, but the document you choose is handled locally by this tool.

Local processing is particularly useful for everyday paperwork that contains addresses, account references, employment information or other material you would rather not send to an additional file-processing service. Browser-local processing is not a substitute for your own device security, however: use a device and network environment you trust when working with sensitive documents.

USA, UK and European signing requirements are not interchangeable

Whether a visual signature is acceptable depends on the document, the receiving organisation and the applicable rules—not simply on where the PDF was created. Electronic-signature frameworks exist in the United States, the United Kingdom and European jurisdictions, but different transactions can require different levels of evidence, identity verification or signing technology.

For an ordinary internal approval, a visible handwritten mark may be exactly what the recipient asks for. A government filing, regulated agreement, property transaction or other formal process may specify a particular electronic-signature platform or certificate level. Follow the instructions supplied by the organisation receiving the document. SonoFiles does not determine legal sufficiency for you.

When this tool is the wrong signing method

  • You need another person to receive an invitation, sign remotely and return the document.
  • The recipient requires signer authentication, an audit trail or evidence of the signing session.
  • The instructions explicitly request a certificate-backed or qualified digital signature.
  • The PDF is encrypted or permission-restricted and you do not have an authorised accessible copy.
  • You need multiple independent signers, witness routing or approval sequencing.

In those cases, use the signing method specified by the recipient or a service designed for that workflow. Adding a handwritten image should not be used to imitate capabilities it does not provide.

Practical checks before sending the file

Open the downloaded PDF in the reader you normally use rather than relying only on the in-browser preview. Confirm that the correct page was signed, the mark is fully visible, no important text was covered and the rest of the document still looks as expected. If a form has a separate date, initials or witness field, complete those requirements separately; the tool does not infer them from the signature.

Keep the unsigned original when the document matters. Having both versions makes it easier to correct a placement mistake without repeatedly editing an already modified copy.

Questions that come up when adding a signature

Will my signature be added to every page?

No. The mark is placed on the page you select. This is useful for contracts and forms where the signature belongs on a particular execution or acknowledgement page.

Can I use a finger instead of a mouse?

Yes. The drawing area accepts pointer input, so a finger on a touch device, stylus, mouse or trackpad can be used. A stylus or larger screen may make a detailed signature easier to draw.

Why does SonoFiles use percentage-based positioning?

Percentages describe a location relative to the PDF page itself. That keeps the placement logic independent of whether you are viewing the tool on a phone, laptop or large desktop monitor.

Does signing change A4 into US Letter or vice versa?

No. The tool uses the existing PDF page dimensions and does not intentionally convert the paper size while adding the signature.

Is the result a legally certified digital signature?

No. The result contains a visible electronic signature mark. It has no certificate-backed identity validation, trusted timestamp or signing audit trail. Use the method required by the recipient and applicable workflow.

Can SonoFiles sign a locked PDF?

The workspace needs an accessible PDF that the browser libraries can modify. If protection prevents editing, use an authorised accessible copy rather than attempting to bypass restrictions you are not permitted to remove.

Is my original PDF overwritten?

No. The signed result is exported as a new file, leaving the source PDF unchanged on your device.
