Use page numbers and ranges such as 1-3,5,8-end. odd and even are also supported.
SonoFiles adds page ranges or part numbers automatically when a task creates multiple files.
Safety limits: 200 MB is recommended for best reliability; the hard maximum is 300 MB. The source can contain up to 1,500 pages, and a split task can create up to 300 output PDFs. Very large documents can use substantial browser memory, especially on phones.

Your files are ready

No upload for splitting

Your PDF stays on your device during this browser-local workflow.

Flexible page control

Extract pages, define custom groups, split by page count or separate every page.

No quality downgrade

Pages are copied into new PDFs without rasterizing them into lower-quality images.

Split a PDF without losing control of the pages

A PDF splitter should do more than cut a document at one arbitrary point. SonoFiles lets you choose the split method that matches the job: keep selected pages in one PDF, build several custom page groups, create equal-size page batches, or separate pages into individual documents.

The tool works with the PDF page structure rather than taking screenshots of each page. That means normal page dimensions, orientation, vector artwork, embedded images and document appearance are preserved as the selected pages are copied into new PDF files.

How to split a PDF

  1. Choose one PDF. Drag it into the tool or select it from your device.
  2. Pick a split method. Extract pages, define separate ranges, choose a fixed page count, or create one PDF per page.
  3. Review the planned output. SonoFiles shows how many PDFs the current settings will create before processing begins.
  4. Split the file. The browser copies the chosen pages into new PDF documents.
  5. Download the result. A single result downloads as a PDF. Multiple results are bundled into a ZIP, with individual PDF links also available.

Page-range syntax that stays practical on desktop and mobile

Text-based page ranges are fast, precise and accessible on small screens. Enter a single page such as 5, a range such as 3-12, or combine them with commas: 1-3,7,10-14.

  • end means the final page, so 20-end keeps page 20 through the last page.
  • odd selects odd-numbered pages.
  • even selects even-numbered pages.
  • For custom multi-file splitting, use semicolons between outputs: 1-4;5-9;10-end.

The tool checks every range against the actual page count and stops with a clear message if a page number is outside the document.

What happens to quality when a PDF is split?

Splitting does not require re-rendering each page as a JPG. SonoFiles copies selected PDF pages into new PDF documents. This avoids an unnecessary image-quality loss and normally keeps text and vector content sharp.

Splitting is also different from compression. The goal is to separate pages, not reduce image resolution or force a smaller file size. If a resulting section is still too large for email or an upload portal, use Compress PDF after splitting it.

Limits designed for real browser reliability

SonoFiles recommends source PDFs up to 200 MB for best reliability and accepts files up to a 300 MB hard maximum. A source can contain up to 1,500 pages, and a single task can create up to 300 output PDFs. These are technical safety limits rather than paid-tier restrictions.

Why limit the number of output files? Separating a very long PDF into hundreds of independent documents can duplicate shared resources such as fonts or images across outputs and can consume much more memory than the original file size suggests. The 300-output ceiling keeps the feature generous while reducing the chance of browser crashes on ordinary devices.

Privacy: local processing for this tool

The Split PDF tool processes the selected PDF in your browser. The file does not need to be uploaded to a SonoFiles splitting server. This can be especially useful when you only need to extract a few pages from a private report, form, statement or application packet.

Browser-local processing still means you should use a device you trust. Files can remain in your browser's memory while the task is running, and downloaded results are saved wherever your browser normally stores downloads.

Common reasons to split a PDF

  • Applications: extract only the pages requested by a school, employer, agency or upload portal.
  • Contracts and reports: send one section without sharing the entire document.
  • Invoices and records: separate combined documents into individual files.
  • Scanning workflows: turn a large scanned packet into smaller logical groups.
  • Email and collaboration: divide long PDFs into manageable sections before sharing.
  • Archiving: break a large reference document into chapter- or subject-based PDFs.

Encrypted and unusual PDFs

Password-protected or encrypted PDFs may not be readable by the browser PDF library. If you own the document or have permission to use it, unlock an authorized copy first and then split that copy. SonoFiles does not attempt to bypass PDF permissions.

Some PDFs contain unusual structures, damaged objects or very complex embedded resources. If a valid PDF cannot be processed, try opening and re-saving it in a trusted PDF application before running the split again.

Split-PDF Troubleshooting and Range Errors

The tool says my range is invalid

Check that every page number exists in the source document. For example, 25-40 cannot be used on a 30-page PDF. You can use end when you want the last page without needing to know its number.

The PDF is within the allowed size but my phone struggles

File size is only one part of memory usage. A PDF with many high-resolution images, fonts or complex pages can require substantially more working memory than its stored file size. For very large PDFs, a desktop browser is usually more reliable.

The split files are not much smaller than expected

Some resources can be repeated across separate output PDFs. Splitting is intended to separate pages, not guarantee a particular file size. Use Compress PDF when size reduction is the goal.

I need more than 300 individual page files

Use the fixed-pages option to create larger groups, or split the source into sections first and process those sections separately. Generating hundreds or thousands of independent PDFs in one browser task can be unnecessarily memory-heavy.

Choose the Split Mode from the Output You Actually Need

Extract mode is best when selected pages should remain together in one PDF. Custom ranges are better for chapters or sections with different boundaries. Fixed-page splitting works well for long records that need consistent chunks. One-PDF-per-page mode suits invoices, certificates and individual records, but it can create hundreds of files. Choosing the right mode first prevents unnecessary outputs and makes the final result easier to verify.

Why Splitting Does Not Guarantee Equal File Sizes

Ten pages from one part of a PDF can be much larger than ten pages from another. Scans, embedded photographs, fonts and shared PDF resources affect bytes independently from page count. A fixed 20-page split therefore creates equal page groups, not equal file sizes. If the receiving system imposes a byte limit, split the document logically first and then compress only the outputs that exceed the limit.

Bookmarks, Links and Signatures Can Depend on the Original File

Visible pages can be copied correctly while document-level features behave differently. Bookmarks may point to pages that are no longer present. Internal links can reference destinations in another output. Cryptographic signatures generally do not remain valid when the signed PDF is divided into new files. Interactive or legally signed material should be tested in the software used by the recipient.

Check Boundaries Before Sharing Multiple Outputs

Review the first and last page of every custom group or fixed-size chunk. For chapter splits, confirm that a heading did not land at the end of the previous file. For files going to different recipients, verify that pages did not spill into the wrong output. Keep the original source until all generated files have been accepted. Individual downloads should remain usable even if ZIP packaging is unavailable.

Split PDF frequently asked questions

Can I extract non-consecutive pages?

Yes. Extract mode can keep selected pages together in one output.

Can I split into chapters?

Yes. Custom range groups are designed for chapters and sections.

Can every page become its own PDF?

Yes, within the 300-output safety limit.

Does splitting reduce quality?

Pages are copied without intentional rasterization.

What is the source limit?

200 MB recommended, 300 MB max and up to 1,500 source pages.

Will bookmarks and signatures remain intact?

Do not assume so; document-level features should be verified.
