Translate Selectable PDF Text Online

SonoFiles extracts selectable text from each PDF page in your browser, sends only that extracted text to the SonoFiles Cloudflare translation endpoint, and builds the translated PDF locally after the translated text returns. The source PDF itself is not uploaded to the translation endpoint.

Fast Translation Without Browser Language Downloads

Translation no longer depends on Chrome's experimental local Translator API or on language packs installed on the user's device. The translation request runs through Cloudflare Workers AI, so supported language pairs work consistently across modern browsers without waiting for Chrome to download a model.

Text PDFs versus Scanned PDFs

Translation starts with the PDF text layer. A scan containing only images has no selectable text to translate. Run OCR PDF first, review the recognized text, then translate the searchable copy. OCR errors can become translation errors, so names, dates and technical terms deserve extra attention.

Translation Does Not Preserve Exact Layout

Languages expand and contract. A sentence translated from English to German, French, Spanish or another language may occupy a different amount of space. SonoFiles creates a readable translated document rather than pretending to preserve the exact typography of the original. Complex tables, forms and side-by-side layouts can require professional desktop publishing after translation.

Choosing Source and Target Languages

Choose the actual source language and the language you want for the output. The selector follows the multilingual M2M100 language set used by the backend. Selecting the correct source language improves translation quality, especially for short text, names and technical terminology.

For Business, Education and Travel Documents

Translation can help with internal understanding of reports, instructions, correspondence and study material across the US, UK and multilingual European markets. It should not be treated as certified translation for immigration, court, medical, academic or other official submissions unless the receiving authority explicitly accepts machine translation.

Privacy and Cloud Translation

The original PDF file remains in the browser, but extracted selectable text is sent over HTTPS to the SonoFiles Cloudflare Workers AI endpoint for translation. Do not use automated cloud translation for material that must remain entirely on-device. Review the SonoFiles Privacy Policy before translating highly sensitive material.

Review Machine Translation Carefully

Machine translation can mishandle names, abbreviations, legal phrases, measurements and domain-specific terminology. Compare important passages with the source, preserve original page references, and use a qualified human translator when errors could affect rights, safety, money or compliance.

Dates, Numbers and Measurements

Translation can alter punctuation conventions while dates and decimal separators vary by locale. Check monetary values, units, addresses and dates carefully, particularly when a document crosses US, UK and continental European conventions.

A Responsible Translation Review Process

Machine translation is most useful when paired with structured review. Start by identifying the purpose: internal comprehension tolerates more uncertainty than a public contract, medical instruction or official filing.

  • Preserve the original PDF and label the translated output clearly so readers do not confuse it with an issued source document.
  • Review names, company names, addresses, dates, currencies, decimal separators, measurements and abbreviations first because these items often need to remain unchanged or follow a specific locale convention.
  • Then inspect headings and repeated terminology for consistency.
  • In technical documents, build a small glossary for terms that must be translated the same way throughout.
  • In legal material, do not assume an apparently natural translation carries the same legal effect across jurisdictions.
  • In multilingual European workflows, the authoritative language can be defined by contract or regulation; in US and UK immigration, court or education workflows, certified translations may be required.
  • A machine-generated translation should not be presented as certified unless an authorized human process has actually certified it.

If the source was OCRed, compare suspicious words against the scan before blaming the translation engine. Translation quality cannot exceed the accuracy of the text it receives.

Translation Quality Checklist

Machine translation is most useful when it is treated as a draft that must be checked against the source.

  • Verify names, addresses, dates, reference numbers and monetary amounts character by character.
  • Check headings and tables separately because extracted reading order can change their meaning.
  • Keep legal, medical, technical and contractual terminology consistent throughout the document.
  • Do not translate signatures, document IDs or official codes unless the receiving workflow specifically requires it.
  • For high-stakes use, have a qualified human reviewer compare the translation with the original.

US, UK and European Language Conventions

Translation and localization are different tasks. Even when the language is English, US and UK spelling, date formats and terminology can differ; European documents may also use decimal commas, 24-hour time, local currency formatting and country-specific administrative terms. Preserve source numbers and identifiers accurately, and localize presentation only when the intended audience requires it. Certified, sworn or official translations have jurisdiction-specific rules, so an automated browser translation should not be represented as a certified translation.

Translate PDF FAQ

Does Translate PDF need a browser language-model download?

No. Translation runs through the SonoFiles Cloudflare Workers AI endpoint, so Chrome does not need to download or install a translation model.

Does it translate scanned pages?

Not directly. Run OCR first.

Is machine translation suitable for official submissions?

Not automatically. Many official processes require a qualified or certified translation.

Can I use the result as a certified translation?

No. Certification or sworn-translation requirements depend on the country and receiving authority. This tool can assist with a working translation, but official use may require a qualified or authorized translator.

Why should I OCR a scanned PDF first?

A scanned PDF may contain only page images. Translation needs extractable text, so OCR can create a text layer first; the OCR result should still be proofread because recognition errors can become translation errors.
