Convert PDF Pages Between A4, Letter and Other Sizes

Page-size conversion is useful when a PDF created for one paper standard must be printed or submitted using another. A4 is common across the UK and Europe, while US Letter is widely used in the United States. This tool changes the page canvas and places the original page content according to the selected fitting behaviour.

A4 Versus US Letter in International Workflows

  • Convert US Letter documents to A4 for UK or European printing.
  • Convert A4 documents to US Letter for US office workflows.
  • Standardize mixed-size PDF pages before printing or distribution.
  • Create a custom page size for a specific form, binder or production requirement.

Choosing a Destination Page Size

  1. Choose the destination paper standard—such as A4 for many UK/European workflows or US Letter for common US workflows.
  2. Select a fit method that preserves proportions rather than stretching page content.
  3. Convert and inspect margins, portrait/landscape pages and any edge content that could be clipped.
  4. Check the printer dialog separately so automatic printer scaling does not undo the intended page size.

Fit, Scale and Margin Behaviour

  • Choose the destination paper size and unit carefully; A4 and Letter are similar but not identical.
  • Fit options control whether the original content is scaled to stay inside the new page or positioned another way.
  • When aspect ratios differ, fitting can create margins. Cropping or stretching should be avoided unless that visual trade-off is intended.

Why Page Resizing Does Not Reflow Text

Scaling vector PDF content can remain sharp, while embedded raster images retain their original pixel detail and may look softer if enlarged. Page-size conversion can also affect line lengths, white margins and perceived layout even when no text is reflowed.

Browser Limits for Large Mixed-Size PDFs

This is geometric page resizing, not word-processing reflow. The tool does not rewrite paragraphs to fit a new paper size. Extremely unusual PDF page boxes, rotations or oversized dimensions should be inspected after conversion.

Local Page-Size Conversion for Print Preparation

Page-size conversion is performed locally and does not require uploading the PDF merely to change its geometry. For confidential documents, verify the resized output and the destination’s print settings before distribution.

How to Fix Clipped or Oversized Content

  • If content is cut off, choose a fit mode that scales the whole source page inside the destination.
  • If margins are larger than expected, remember that A4 and Letter have different aspect ratios.
  • If printing still scales, disable 'Fit to page' in the printer dialog when exact output dimensions matter.
  • For mixed orientation documents, verify portrait and landscape pages separately.

A4 and Letter Are Similar but Not Interchangeable

A4 measures 210 × 297 mm and is standard across the UK and much of Europe. US Letter measures 8.5 × 11 inches and is common in the United States.

Their aspect ratios differ, so converting between them normally introduces margins or requires scaling. A document cannot perfectly fill both sizes without some compromise.

Fit Usually Beats Stretch

Scaling the source proportionally to fit inside the new page keeps circles round and text undistorted. Stretching width and height independently may fill the page but visibly deform content. For business documents, forms and reports, proportional fit with modest margins is usually the safer choice.

Page-Size Conversion Is Not Word-Processor Reflow

A PDF is a fixed-layout format. Changing the page canvas does not rewrap paragraphs as Word would.

The existing page is scaled or positioned on the new page. If text must actually reflow for a new paper format, edit the original source document rather than relying on PDF geometry alone.

Print Dialogs Can Undo Your Careful Sizing

Even after converting to A4 or Letter, a printer can apply its own 'Fit', 'Shrink oversized pages' or borderless scaling. If physical dimensions matter, check the print preview and choose the appropriate actual-size setting. The PDF and the printer each have separate scaling decisions.

Choose the Target Paper Standard Before Scaling Content

If a document will be printed in the United States, US Letter may be the practical target; in the UK and much of Europe, A4 is more common. Because the two shapes differ, proportional fitting can create extra margin. That is normally preferable to stretching or clipping. Decide whether the document needs to preserve every edge, maximise printable area or fit within a strict form size. Then check the printer dialog so a second automatic scaling step does not undo the intended page dimensions.

  • Choose A4, Letter, Legal or custom size deliberately.
  • Prefer proportional fit for normal documents.
  • Expect margins when aspect ratios differ.
  • Check portrait and landscape pages.
  • Disable unwanted printer scaling for exact output.
  • Remember that PDF resizing does not reflow paragraphs.

PDF Page Size FAQ

What is the difference between A4 and US Letter?

A4 is 210 × 297 mm; US Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches. Their aspect ratios are different.

Does this reflow text?

No. It scales/places existing PDF page content.

Can I use a custom size?

Yes when custom dimensions are available.

Will image quality change?

Embedded raster images can look softer if they are enlarged substantially.
