Convert for compatibility, not just for a new extension
Image formats differ in transparency, compression, browser support and the kinds of images they handle well.
Changing an image format can solve a real compatibility problem, but converting does not improve source quality. A low-resolution JPG converted to PNG remains low resolution, and a heavily compressed image cannot regain detail that was already discarded. Choose the output based on where the file is going and which features must survive the conversion.
JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC and SVG
JPG is widely accepted and efficient for photographs, but it does not support transparency. PNG preserves transparency and sharp edges well, though photographic PNG files can be large. WebP and AVIF can provide efficient web delivery when the receiving software supports them. HEIC is common on some phones but may need conversion for older software or upload portals. SVG is vector-based; converting it to PNG creates a fixed-resolution raster image, so choose the output dimensions carefully.
Check color and transparency after conversion
Browsers and libraries do not always interpret embedded color information exactly the same way, and formats without alpha transparency need a background color when transparent pixels are flattened. Review the converted image at normal size and, when the file is important, keep the original so you can make another export with different settings.
